3 Exercises That Can Also Help Us Boost Our Mental Health

Three women in workout clothes

Living in a very fast-paced world makes us all prone to dwindling mental health – even more so for us women, with so many things around us that can easily dampen our moods. From body issues to societal standards, we deal with a lot of things on a daily basis.

There are different ways to get our spirits back up. We can always have a good cup of coffee or tea, watch some feel-good movies, go shopping and hang out with friends, and so much more – but if there’s one common thing that’s often overlooked as a method of having the good vibes again, it’s how exercising or doing physical activities can actually help in lifting our moods.

Here are some simple physical activities that can help in improving our mental health

Take some time to go on regular walks (or small hikes, if possible)

Taking long walks or hikes has its benefits. In fact, there are also many benefits of exercising outdoors! Besides enjoying the scenery or having a breath of fresh air, it also gets our hearts pumping faster, which helps in regulating blood and oxygen flow, and helps our minds be more focused. Walking for at least 30 minutes a day helps us become more physically fit and lessens the feeling of isolation or cabin fever, especially if we spend a lot of time glued to our desks.

Practise mindfulness by doing yoga or meditation

Both of these exercises involve deep breathing, which allows us to calm our minds and ease the tensions in our muscles. If we’re going for a healthier mind and body and we want to hit two birds with one stone, these activities are the best ways to do it.

Engage in a couple of sports

If you’ve been meaning to learn a new sport or go back to some that you’ve enjoyed at one point, perhaps this is your sign to finally go for it (or go back at it!) again. Sports can help release endorphins and serotonin in our bloodstreams which can surely give us that mood boost when we’re feeling down.

The mental health benefits of exercise are undeniable, especially with the studies and facts backing them up. For example, being more physically active helps in relieving stress, improving memory, and having a better sleep at night – all of which can positively affect your overall mood.

Of course, we truly understand how exercising can be a tad bit intimidating, especially if you’re a woman and you haven’t done it in a while or if you haven’t done it at all. No worries, because here at You Can Do Fit, we’re all about giving you a safe space with like-minded women. We are a women-only community that provides outdoor group fitness classes and we cater to a supportive and welcoming community at Birralee Reserve, Innaloo.

It doesn’t matter if you’re taking your first step or your millionth leap – all that matters is showing up and taking that initiative to feel better, both physically and mentally!
